FAQ

Is automotive mechanic a promising career?

If you are determined to excel, the automotive industry offers many opportunities. You can only succeed in this field if you work hard and learn from others.

Excellent communication skills are essential as you will spend most of the time speaking to customers or other employees. You should also be willing to travel and work long hours, making commuting difficult.

You can take classes at universities and community colleges if you are interested in a career as an automotive technician. Many schools offer programs for students who are interested to learn about auto sales, customer service, or repair.

Studying mechanical engineering is an option if you're interested in pursuing a degree. It's possible to get a bachelor's degree in just four years.

Many employers will hire graduates straight out from school. So it's wise to start looking for employment while you still have the chance to study part-time.

Once you've completed your education, you'll probably need to complete some form of training before being able to take up a position as an automotive technician.

This means you'll need to pass exams such as the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. This test covers engine maintenance and brakes as well as suspension.

After passing the ASE test you can apply for a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE) license.

You can perform repairs on private cars by obtaining a license. Based on the services rendered, you will receive compensation.

Not all states require licensing. A license is required if you plan on working outside of your home state.

Some states will not issue licenses until an individual has completed certain training. This may be the case for you.

What is the length of an automotive training course?

An automotive course lasts 3 years.

The first year is dedicated to theory and learning about cars. The second year will be spent in practical training. Here you will learn how fix engines, drive and other mechanic jobs. The last year is spent at a local shop, where you will get practical experience with real-world problems.

How can I fix my automobile as a hobby.

Take up a hobby in car repair if you have an interest. You can repair them, buy their parts, sell them, or just have fun with them. If you are looking for something new, this would be a great hobby.

But it is not easy to turn this into your full-time occupation. This requires dedication and hard work. Also, you will need to put a lot of money into it.

It is best to avoid getting involved in car accidents unless you have good reasons.

What qualifications is required to become an mechanic?

You will need to pass several exams in order to become a mechanic. These include:

  • A test of general knowledge
  • A practical exam
  • An apprenticeship test

These tests are designed for you to understand the basic concepts and principles of mechanics before your start as a technician.

Once you've passed these tests, you'll be eligible to work as a mechanic. An apprenticeship is still required. This will require you to learn the trade.

You'll need to attend classes and workshops to learn everything you need to know about repairing vehicles. You'll also have to work alongside experienced mechanics.

For mechanic success, you'll need to be focused and meticulous. Vehicle repairs require you to be very attentive.

To become a good mechanic, you need patience and persistence. If you don’t like following directions, then this career path may not suit you.

This job is for you if you are passionate about cars and love fixing them.

Is it important which college I go?

It's not true. There is no difference in the programs offered by colleges for getting into automotive work. There are some schools that offer more specific programs than others.

How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing the program, he/she must take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. The first section tests for mechanical knowledge, the second for practical skills. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require that candidates attend training courses, while others permit them to learn independently. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

Apply to your local dealership to become an automotive technician. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeships last for three years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Many schools offer classes during regular hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. An average salary for a jobless individual is $20,000 per annum. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. Associate's degrees earn approximately $24,000 per annum. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
